When teachers <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">improve their existing skills and add new skills, the benefits are felt both by the teacher and their pupils.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/apprendre.auf.org\/wp-content\/opera\/13-BF-References-et-biblio-RPT-2014\/Visible%20Learning_A%20synthesis%20or%20over%20800%20Meta-analyses%20Relating%20to%20Achievement_Hattie%20J%202009%20...pdf\">John Hattie\u2019s synthesis of 800 meta-analyses relating to achievement<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, CPD has an impact of 0.62 on the scale. It is in the top 20 of all practices analysed and thus reaffirms its importance. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h5>\u00a0<\/h5><h5><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Common challenges\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h5><div><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">Some<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0common challenges faced by schools are pitching training at the right level:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li data-leveltext=\"-\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"4\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What training is for all staff and what training is for smaller groups?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li data-leveltext=\"-\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"4\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What types of training activities suits groups or individual teachers?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li data-leveltext=\"-\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"4\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Assessing how much it has impacted pupil outcomes.<\/span><\/li><li data-leveltext=\"-\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"4\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\">What mechanisms do we have in place for monitoring and evaluating CPD?<\/li><li data-leveltext=\"-\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"4\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\">How can we be sure that a CPD programme is making a difference if new knowledge and skills being used in the classroom are not being evaluated?<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Doug Lemov, author of international bestseller Teach like a champion-now, said:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u201c<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On the whole, researchers agree that professional development programs typically have weak effects on practice because they lack focus, intensity, follow up and continuity.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ineffective CPD, Lemov argues, is not focused on effective teaching and is not evaluated for its impact on pupil achievement.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Teachers are already struggling to find enough time in the day to stay on top of a complex workload. Spending additional time on training needs to be time well spent.
