At its best, planning is about:<\/p><p data-start=\"1028\" data-end=\"1081\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/svg\/1f539.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd39\" \/> Sequencing learning in a logical and effective way.<\/p><p data-start=\"1028\" data-end=\"1081\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/svg\/1f539.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd39\" \/> Anticipating misconceptions and addressing them.<\/p><p data-start=\"1137\" data-end=\"1206\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/svg\/1f539.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd39\" \/> Building lessons that are tailored to the needs of specific pupils.<\/p><p data-start=\"1208\" data-end=\"1391\">When this is done well, delivery feels natural and purposeful. When it\u2019s missing, lessons can feel superficial or falter as teachers struggle to adapt to the class in front of them.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5e2e971 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"5e2e971\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5687211 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5687211\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why might this be happening?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2add184 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2add184\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"1433\" data-end=\"1504\">Through conversations with school leaders, a few themes have emerged:<\/p><p data-start=\"1508\" data-end=\"1773\"><strong data-start=\"1508\" data-end=\"1545\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/svg\/1f539.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd39\" \/> Reliance on centralised resources<\/strong><br data-start=\"1545\" data-end=\"1548\" \/>Many ECTs are accustomed to teaching from pre-prepared PowerPoints and schemes of work. While these resources support consistency and save time, they don\u2019t always encourage teachers to understand the pedagogy behind them.<\/p><p data-start=\"1777\" data-end=\"2039\"><strong data-start=\"1777\" data-end=\"1807\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/svg\/1f539.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd39\" \/> Changing approaches in ITT<\/strong><br data-start=\"1807\" data-end=\"1810\" \/>Some ITT providers actively encourage trainees to use school resources in their first terms so they can focus on behaviour management. While well-intentioned, this can reduce opportunities to develop planning skills early on, which would in turn help to improve behaviour.<\/p><p data-start=\"2043\" data-end=\"2336\"><strong data-start=\"2043\" data-end=\"2065\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/svg\/1f539.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd39\" \/> Workload pressures<\/strong><br data-start=\"2065\" data-end=\"2068\" \/>It is absolutely right that we find ways to reduce unnecessary workload, but there\u2019s a risk that we\u2019ve swung too far towards \u201cready-made\u201d lessons. A resource is not a lesson, and turning a resource into a meaningful sequence of learning is a very different skill.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dbe4620 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"dbe4620\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8439bc4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8439bc4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What's the risk?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-46b3f03 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"46b3f03\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"2366\" data-end=\"2459\">If new teachers aren\u2019t developing planning skills, the impact goes beyond their first year:<\/p><p data-start=\"2462\" data-end=\"2643\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/svg\/1f539.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd39\" \/> They may struggle to adapt lessons to meet the needs of their pupils (<a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/progressteaching.com\/adaptive-teaching-our-biggest-challenge-in-the-classroom\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"2532\" data-end=\"2639\">adaptive teaching<\/a>).<\/p><p data-start=\"2646\" data-end=\"2710\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/svg\/1f539.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd39\" \/> Behaviour issues may increase if lessons aren\u2019t well-tailored.<\/p><p data-start=\"2713\" data-end=\"2805\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/svg\/1f539.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd39\" \/> Their ability to contribute to curriculum planning later in their career could be limited.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aeafad9 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"aeafad9\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2869954 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2869954\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What's the solution?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b791a06 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b791a06\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"2839\" data-end=\"2940\">Schools are responding to this challenge in different ways. Some examples I\u2019ve come across include:<\/p><p data-start=\"2944\" data-end=\"3157\"><strong data-start=\"2944\" data-end=\"2974\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/svg\/1f539.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd39\" \/> Setting clear expectations<\/strong>: One school I work with has banned generic PowerPoints altogether. Teachers are provided with medium-term plans and resources but are expected to craft their own lessons from them.<\/p><p data-start=\"3161\" data-end=\"3501\"><strong data-start=\"3161\" data-end=\"3190\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/svg\/1f539.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd39\" \/> Coaching through feedback<\/strong>: Another school uses <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/progressteaching.com\/lesson-feedback-guide-design-and-technology\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"3212\" data-end=\"3313\">lesson feedback sessions<\/a> to remodel part of a lesson with the teacher, then has the teacher re-plan and re-deliver that section themselves. This not only sharpens delivery but also develops planning confidence.<\/p><p data-start=\"3505\" data-end=\"3750\"><strong data-start=\"3505\" data-end=\"3527\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/svg\/1f539.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd39\" \/> Blended approaches<\/strong>: A gentler model is to expect ITTs\/ECTs to fully plan a proportion of their lessons each week, while using central resources for others. Over time, this builds their own bank of lessons while keeping workload manageable.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c05340f e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"c05340f\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-97a4ec6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"97a4ec6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Final thoughts<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4d65363 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4d65363\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"3778\" data-end=\"4144\">Planning remains a crucial part of teacher development. Resources and schemes of work have a valuable role to play, but they should not replace the skill of planning.
