At a time when schools are navigating new expectations in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/education-inspection-framework\/education-inspection-framework-for-use-from-november-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ofsted framework<\/a> and working tirelessly to meet the needs of disadvantaged learners, developing this culture is no longer optional, it\u2019s essential.<\/p><p>In this blog, I explore what a culture of feedback really is, why it matters, and what happens when it\u2019s in place.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9f30b93 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"9f30b93\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0b47434 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0b47434\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What do we mean by a \u201cculture of feedback\u201d?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ef082af elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ef082af\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Before we can understand the culture, we have to understand <a href=\"https:\/\/progressteaching.com\/lesson-feedback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">feedback<\/a> itself. While it sounds simple, meaningful definitions vary. Three stood out:<\/p><p><strong><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/svg\/1f539.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd39\" \/> <\/span><\/b>EEF:<\/strong> Feedback is information given to a learner about their performance relative to learning goals.<\/p><p><strong><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/svg\/1f539.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd39\" \/> <\/span><\/b>Cameron Conaway:<\/strong> Feedback helps someone adjust to become more effective.<\/p><p><strong><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/svg\/1f539.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd39\" \/> <\/span><\/b>John Hattie:<\/strong> Feedback clarifies <em>where you\u2019re going<\/em>, <em>how you\u2019re doing<\/em>, and <em>what to do next<\/em>. Importantly, vague praise isn\u2019t feedback because it doesn\u2019t change thinking or behaviour.<\/p><p>From these, we can say that a culture of feedback is fundamentally a <strong>culture of learning, <\/strong>a shared mindset across teachers and leaders where feedback is continuous, purposeful, and rooted in improvement rather than judgement.<\/p><p>In schools that embed this culture well, you often see:<\/p><p><strong><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/svg\/1f539.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd39\" \/> <\/span><\/b>Normalised, ongoing dialogue<\/strong> about teaching<\/p><p><strong><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/svg\/1f539.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd39\" \/> <\/span><\/b>Leaders modelling openness<\/strong>, acting on feedback themselves<\/p><p><strong><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/svg\/1f539.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd39\" \/> <\/span><\/b>Collective responsibility<\/strong> for developing teaching and learning<\/p><p><strong><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/svg\/1f539.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd39\" \/> <\/span><\/b>Feedback on the feedback<\/strong>, ensuring clarity, consistency, and impact<\/p><p>An important principle underpinning this culture is the <strong>celebration of error<\/strong>. As Hattie and Clarke highlight:<\/p><blockquote data-start=\"1137\" data-end=\"1318\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1139\" data-end=\"1318\">\u201cErrors are not failures, they are catalysts for feedback, insight, and growth.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-33471fa e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"33471fa\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-39cb05f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"39cb05f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why a culture of feedback is so important<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c68d159 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c68d159\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The evidence is clear: <strong>teaching quality is the biggest driver of pupil outcomes<\/strong>. Research from Dylan Wiliam, Jenny Gore, the EEF, and the Sutton Trust all point to the same conclusion: improving teaching is the most effective lever schools have.<\/p><p>A culture of feedback matters because it:<\/p><ol><li><strong>Improves teaching quality at scale<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>When feedback becomes routine, teaching continually improves. That improvement is especially powerful for disadvantaged pupils, who make the greatest gains from strong teaching.<\/p><ol start=\"2\"><li><strong> Supports the new Ofsted framework<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>The updated framework puts significant emphasis on high-quality teaching and the experience of disadvantaged learners. A well-established feedback culture directly supports these expectations, not through performative compliance, but through authentic professional practice.<\/p><ol start=\"3\"><li><strong> Boosts teacher morale and retention<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>With teacher leaving rates rising, feedback becomes a key retention tool. Teachers are more likely to stay when they feel seen, supported, and developed. Positive, developmental feedback strengthens confidence, motivation, and professional pride.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b85121e e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"b85121e\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-926a68b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"926a68b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What happens when we don\u2019t have a feedback culture?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-350c0c7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"350c0c7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Several risks begin to emerge:<\/p><ol><li><strong> A Lack of evidence<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>Without regular feedback, leaders are left guessing about whether training has been embedded or whether teaching aligns with expectations. Issues can go unnoticed until they become serious.<\/p><ol start=\"2\"><li><strong> High-stakes observations<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>Low-frequency feedback creates anxiety and a sense of surveillance.<br \/><strong>High frequency = low stakes.<br \/>Low frequency = high stakes.<\/strong><br \/>This shuts down openness and growth.<\/p><ol start=\"3\"><li><strong> \u201cForgotten teachers\u201d in the middle<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>Mid-career teachers, typically those 5 to 15 years in, often receive the least structured development. Yet they are the backbone of many schools and represent one of the highest flight-risk groups. Regular feedback and personalised development can be transformative for retaining this group and ensure their classroom expertise is used for the benefit of their colleagues.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-785c164 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"785c164\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9b1f1b8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9b1f1b8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">But what happens when a feedback culture really takes hold?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-faf2903 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"faf2903\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Schools that invest in this culture see several transformational effects:<\/p><ol><li><strong> Clarity and alignment around \u201cgreat teaching\u201d<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>A shared model of expert teaching becomes visible across classrooms. Staff understand expectations clearly, and new colleagues integrate quickly because it is evident \u201chow we do it here\u201d from day one.<\/p><ol start=\"2\"><li><strong> Better evidence for stronger decisions<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>Frequent feedback creates high-quality data. Leaders can quickly answer questions like:<\/p><ul><li>What\u2019s the quality of teaching across subjects?<\/li><li>Is feedback happening often enough?<\/li><li>Which teaching strands should be prioritised for PD?<\/li><\/ul><p>This ensures professional development is strategic, not based on \u2018gut feeling\u2019.<\/p><ol start=\"3\"><li><strong> Continuous professional growth<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>Research shows CPD only works when learning happens over time. A feedback culture creates those ongoing iterative loops, turning development from a one-off event into a daily habit.<\/p><ol start=\"4\"><li><strong> Inclusion of all adults in the classroom<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>The same principles can be applied to TAs and other staff, giving schools a unified approach to defining, observing, and developing high-quality practice across all roles.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d3440b8 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"d3440b8\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7c7d82b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7c7d82b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Building the conditions where everyone thrives<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cd3624c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cd3624c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A culture of feedback is not built in a day, and it\u2019s not about increasing scrutiny or adding workload. It\u2019s about creating the conditions for genuine professional growth, where teachers feel supported, leaders have clarity, and pupils benefit from consistently high-quality teaching. When feedback becomes a daily, low-stakes habit, improvement becomes collective, continuous, and sustainable. In this kind of culture, staff thrive, learners flourish, and schools become places where everyone grows together.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4279b1f e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\"
